Earth Day Celebration

Sunday, April 20, 2008, 3:00 to 5:00 p.m.

McConnell Springs, Lexington, Kentucky

Sponsored by

Franciscan Peace Center, Inc.

SAINT FRANCIS of Assisi, Italy lived in the thirteenth century and modeled a great love and respect for nature. His “Canticle of Creatures” is a hymn of praise that recaps Francis’s journey on Earth in and through the beautiful things of creation. Francis attained a sense of family by referring to all creation as both brother and sister. It is from such love and respect that justice and peace flow.  This is the “heart” whence Franciscan Peace Center was born and from which it lives.

McCONNELL SPRINGS is the “heart” of Lexington. In June 1775, William McConnell and his fellow frontier explorers camped at a natural spring in the wilderness of the Virginia territory known as Kentucky; word came from nearby Fort Boonesboro that the first battle of the American Revolution had been fought in Lexington, Massachusetts. In honor of the battle, the group named their future settlement “Lexington”.  Out of The Springs, our city was born.

ALL ARE WELCOME to celebrate International Earth Day on Sunday, April 20 at McConnell Springs.

Gather first in the Educational Center where Christine Cunha of “Healthy Planet Initiatives” will present Greening ourselves and our communities: fresh thinking and practical tips . She’ll talk about helping to “green” a community, either by personal example, or by “growing” an environmental group, among other things.

Afterwards, join a guided tour of McConnell Springs. Please note: the ½ mile trail is paved and completely handicap accessible.

Bring a sack lunch and stay afterwards to eat and socialize. Picnic tables and benches are plentiful.
